PROMOTioN @ Grids meet Renewables

On 20 February 2018, WindEurope and the Renewable Grid Initiative (RGI) hosted the “Grids meet Renewables – Conference and Best Practice Fair” in Brussels. The event was focused on the key question on how grids and renewables can best work together. Within different panel discussion and in keynote presentations, various speakers from industry, academia, consultancy and politics tackled several key issues, such as common strategies for grids and renewable energies as well as questions on how to operate a grid with larger shares of renewables. In addition and while elaborating on the development of necessary infrastructure, social concerns as well as cost and regulatory considerations were discussed.

PROMOTioN joined the best-practice fair alongside the conference programme and provided insight in recent project findings as well as the general project scope at the designated project stand. Cornelis Plet from the project coordinator DNV GL pitched the project in a teaser presentation, explaining the interdisciplinary and unique objectives of PROMOTioN, reaching from the development of technological innovation to recommendations for regulatory framework conditions for meshed HVDC offshore grids. Triggered by this, various stakeholders found their way to the PROMOTioN exhibition and engaged in discussions with present project partners from Groningen Center of Energy Law, DNV GL and Stiftung OFFSHORE-WINDENERGIE.
Wrapping up the event, Giles Dickson, CEO of WindEurope, called for more investments in grids, demand response and storage.
