Successful completion of the Factory Acceptance Test of the MMC Test Bench

Within PROMOTioN a novel laboratory set-up to investigate control and protection schemes of meshed HVDC offshore grids will be built at RWTH Aachen University: the MMC Test Bench. This October a major milestone for the MMC Test Bench was reached. Members of RWTH Aachen travelled to OPAL-RT in Montreal to supervise the Factory Acceptance Test of the tailormade converter hardware, which was very successful.

For the Factory Acceptance Test members of RWTH Aachen travelled to OPAL-RT in Montreal to supervise the completion of the prespecified test cases. On one hand, the basic protection functionalities to protect the equipment were tested, one the other hand dedicated test cases relevant for the studies in PROMOTioN were conducted. It was demonstrated that the lab-scale converters are capable to operate both in a monopole point-to-point configuration at ±200 V transmitting 6 kW, as well as a bipole point-to-point configuration at ±400 V transmitting 12 kW.

The four tested and four additional converters will now be shipped to the laboratory site at RWTH Aachen University where they will be combined with power amplifiers and real-time simulators resulting in a lab infrastructure that allows control-hardware-in-the-loop and power-hardware-in-the-loop investigations of meshed HVDC grids.
