Successful test of Black Start capability

In recent years, with increasing penetration of wind power in the electrical network, and the corresponding reduction of conventional generation plant, there is interest from TSO’s in procuring black start services from wind power plants. Furthermore, offshore wind turbines with the capability of starting, self-sustaining, and energizing the offshore AC network offer benefits of flexibility to wind power plant operators in the event of prolonged outages of the export connection.

Last 12th of July DNV GL in cooperation with wind turbine manufacturer Ming Yang successfully tested the Black Start capability of a 1 MW wind turbine converter in the newly developed Cosimulation - Power Wind Turbine testbench in the Flex Power Grid Laboratory in Arnhem, Netherlands. This reserach project is part of PROMOTioN.
